Ground: Middelfart Stadion

Date: 3rd June 2022

Match: Middelfart - Kolding  3-2  (2. Division)

Attendance: 505

When travelling from Sweden through Denmark you cross several bridges. First up is of course the Öresund bridge & tunnel linking Sweden with Denmark. From Korsør there used to be ferries connecting Sjælland with Fyn. Since 1998 there has been an impressive suspension bridge across the Store Bælt strait though. The main span is actually the 5th longest in the world. On the other side of Fyn there is a bridge from Middelfart to Fredericia across Lille Bælt. This bridge is “only” 1,200 m and I have crosse several times

On Friday evening Middelfart were hosting Kolding in the relegation group of 2. Division. Kolding is in Jutland, on the other side of Lille Bælt, and only 20 km from Middelfart. With two rounds to go Kolding are already safe but Middelfart is a point from safety. It is around 3.5 hours by car for me to Middelfart but as I was allowed to take the day off work I arrived in Middelfart as early as 14.00. My hotel was next to the train station and only 20 minutes by foot from Middelfart Stadion. The weather was really nice, 19 ℃ and sunshine, and after checking-in I made it to the harbour area where I enjoyed a beer while overlooking the Lille Bælt bridge.

Kick-off at Middelfart Stadion was at 18.30 and 30 minutes prior to kick-off I was inside the ground. Middelfart Stadion is situated in a wooded area in the outskirts of town and is a really nice ground, especially on a Friday evening in perfect weather conditions. The official attendance was given as 505, highest of the season for Middelfart, and around 150 of those had travelled from Kolding. Middelfart really needed the three points tonight against the run of play they made it 1-0 in the 30th minute. Kolding equalised early on in the 2nd half and should have scored again from their numerous chances. Instead Middelfart had a successful counter attack and scored, 2-1 with 25 minutes to go. Five minutes from the end Kolding deservedly equalised and most of us inside Middelfart Stadion thought that was it for Middelfart but in the 93rd minute Middelfart counter attacked again and from the resulting corner they made it 3-2. Completely against the run of play but a very important win for Middelfart. As I left the ground the Middelfart players and fans still celebrated this memorable derby victory.
