AFC Wimbledon

Ground: Plough Lane Stadium

Visits: 1

Date: 6th April 2026

Match: AFC Wimbledon - Luton  0-3  (League 1)

Attendance: 8,668

It has been a while but it was finally time for another trip to England. With the new AFC Wimbledon stadium at Plough Lane, officially The Cherry Red Records Stadium, being my only remaining ground in League 1 this was to be my destination on Easter Monday. My flight to London Heathrow departed Copenhagen at 17.30 on Sunday afternoon and two hours later (18.30 local time) I was back in London. With my hotel being close to Paddington station it was an easy train ride from the airport.

The forecast for Easter Monday said 14℃ and sunshine. The forecast was correct and after a chaotic breakfast, long queues for everything, I started the day with a walk to Hyde Park where plenty of tourists, runners and dogs enjoyed the glorious weather. It almost felt like summer and with storm Dave hitting southern/western Sweden I realised I was in the right place today. From Paddington I then used the tube for a direct journey to Wimbledon Park, the tube station nearest to Plough Lane.

The original Plough Lane stadium, situated some 200 m from the current ground, was used by Wimbledon FC from 1912 until May 1991. After the Hillsborough disaster new ground safety measures meant Plough Lane could no longer be used and the club relocated to Selhurst Park. Plough Lane was used for reserve teams football until 1998 and in 2002 the ground was demolished. Wimbledon FC spent 12 years in exile at Selhurst Park and the club owners then relocated the club to Milton Keynes. Frustrated and angry supporters founded AFC Wimbledon and in 2011 the new club made it back to the Football League. From 2002 until 2020 AFC Wimbledon played their home games at Kingsmeadow Stadium. In 2015 the club was given permission to build a new ground on the site of the former Greyhound Stadium and 3 November 2020 the club inaugurated the new ground. Officially the capacity is given as 9,200 and the attendance record is 8,686 (v Port Vale in 2025).

I have to say I like the set up at the new Plough Lane. After entering there is an inner court where there are plenty of food/drink trucks and I enjoyed a pre-match sausage and beer in the sunshine. My seat was in row J in the east stand and from there I had a good view of the action. It has to be said AFC Wimbledon were really poor this afternoon and Luton could quite easily win 3-0. AFC Wimbledon had three players substituted due to injury and with only four points to the relegation zone they need to get their injured players back as soon as possible. The 930 Luton supporters could celebrate three points though and I could celebrate having re-completed League 1.
