IFK MalmöGround: Malmö Idrottsplats Visits: 1 Date: 1st May 2008 Match: IFK Malmö - AIK 0-2 (Svenska Cupen) Attendance: 702
IFK Malmö returned to Malmö Stadion in 2009 and will play at least the 2009 season at that ground.
Malmö Idrottsplats was inaugurated 4th July 1896 and hosted a number of sports like athletics, gymnastics, speed skating and football. In the 1940s Swedish runner Gunder Hägg twice beat the world record (2,000m and 1 mile) at Malmö IP. In 1956 the record attendance of 22,620 watched Malmö FF-Helsingborg but when Malmö Stadion was ready for the 1958 World Cup Malmö FF and IFK Malmö both moved to the new stadium. It wasn´t until 1999 that the Malmö clubs returned, due to a huge drop in attendances, to Malmö Idrottsplats, which had been renovated to a "football only" stadium and the capacity is 7,600 (3,900 seats). When Malmö FF got better and better crowds they had to move back to Stadion and Malmö Idrottsplats is today used by IFK Malmö and the women´s team Ldb Malmö. Todays match was in the 2nd round of the Swedish Cup and I finally got a chance to go to Malmö Idrottsplats and see IFK Malmö play a game with a decent crowd. Two defeats in a row for the home team and rain, which actually stopped ten minutes before kick-off, meant the attendance was a bit lower than I had hoped but I enjoyed the trip and the nice ground nevertheless.
