After years of discussions and planning Malmö FF could in April 2009 finally move from Malmö Stadion to their new ground, which was given the name Swedbank Stadion. The new home of Malmö FF have a capacity of 24,000 including a 6,000 home terrace. For international matches the capacity is 21,000 (all-seated). Swedbank Stadion is located next door to the old ground Malmö Stadion, which will remain as an athletics ground. Pictures from Malmö Stadion can be found at Malmö Stadion
The first match at Swedbank Stadion was against Örgryte on Easter Monday but since I was in Bradford that day I had to wait until the following Sunday for my first visit. The cities of Malmö and Trelleborg are only around 20 km apart but for most Malmö fans this is just any other game, Trelleborg fans however see Malmö FF as their main rivals. The away fans could celebrate an early goal, 0-1 in the second minute, and Malmö were clearly not playing at their best in the first half. In stoppage time they managed to equalise though and when the second half started Malmö played a lot better but couldn´t get that second goal and the match finished 1-1. Swedbank Stadion is by far the best ground in Sweden. As you can see below the ground is a two-tiered seated bowl on three sides but the 6,000 one-tiered home terrace in the north end of the ground is what really add some character and improve the look and experience of the ground. When you are in the interiors of the stands it is also obvious it has not been saved on expenses and Malmö FF can be very proud to call this their new Himmaborg !
